To run regular story time sessions for deaf and hard of hearing children. To help deaf and hard of hearing children develop a love of books and reading and encourage families to join the library and borrow books. This role is needed across all 7 library sites: Colliers Wood, Mitcham, Morden, Pollards Hill, Raynes Park, West Barnes and Wimbledon.
Help to plan, organise and implement a programme of story-times aimed at children who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Prepare and organise the set up of any equipment or resources for story-times.
Work with Library staff to increase participation levels in children’s SEND activities.
Help to initiate, maintain and develop contacts in the local community to increase and develop participation and awareness.
Monitor and assist in improving the quality of service delivered in children’s SEND activities.
Any other associated tasks from time to time to be agreed.
The ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with children, library staff, other volunteers and members of the public.
Confident in using British Sign Language and able to sign stories.
Previous experience of working with children and participating in children’s activities preferred.
A basic understanding of how the Library Service operates, either in general terms or in the candidate's personal experience.
Reliable, confident and responsible individual, with enthusiasm and effective interpersonal skills.
The ability to cope with the duties and responsibilities of the post and the associated environment, including an understanding of health & safety.
