To run regular story time sessions for children with special educational needs and disability (SEND), using small props that children can touch and feel. To help children develop a love of books and reading and encourage families to join the library and borrow books. This role is needed in all 7 libraries: Colliers Wood, Mitcham, Morden, Pollards Hill, Raynes Park, Wimbledon and West Barnes.
Help to plan, organise and implement a programme of story-times aimed at SEND children.
Prepare and organise the set up of any equipment or resources for story-times.
Work with Library staff to increase participation levels in children’s SEND activities.
Help to initiate, maintain and develop contacts in the local community to increase and develop participation and awareness.
Monitor and assist in improving the quality of service delivered in children’s SEND activities.
Any other associated tasks from time to time to be agreed.
Previous experience of working with children and participating in children’s activities preferred.
Confident telling stories to groups of children with special educational needs and disability (full training will be provided).
The ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with children, library staff, other volunteers and members of the public.
A basic understanding of how the Library Service operates, either in general terms or in the candidate's personal experience.
Reliable, confident and responsible individual, with enthusiasm and effective interpersonal skills.
The ability to cope with the duties and responsibilities of the post and the associated environment, including an understanding of health & safety.
