Opportunity Description

The ‘Common Sense’ project is designed to provide opportunities for increased heritage engagement amongst residents with special needs. This will include appropriate signposting and promotion of accessible services, activities and events, enabling people with special needs and / or their carers to advance-plan visits to Merton Heritage Centre.


To develop this work, project volunteers will be trained to recognise, engage with and support adult visitors with a range of special needs from hearing loss and visual impairment, to SEND and autism. The project team will also produce a range of themed tours, displays and sensory resources, tailored to meet the needs of visitors with disabilities and special needs, helping them to learn about and engage with Merton’s history in a fun and non-threatening environment.


To plan, research and deliver guided tours of Merton Heritage Centre and its displays; this includes a signed tour for visitors with hearing loss and a guided audio-described tour for those with visual impairments.
To produce sensory displays, resources and themed presentations for interactive units to make aspects of local heritage more accessible to visitors with a range of special needs.

Training available:

Full library induction (library layout and relevant procedures; H&S training)
Training in basic display work
Training in delivering tours
Training in basic conservation
Training in local studies research methods
Training in working with adults living with hearing loss and/or with visual impairments
Training in the use of associated equipment/software



2. Time Commitment

Times when activity is available


October 2019 -  End of March 2020. Continuation after this date may be possible.




We are looking for an ongoing commitment over 6 months. Minimum commitment of 3 hours once or twice per week. Precise commitments to be agreed.



*Occasional work at other heritage sites across Merton may be required
